Are you feeling tired, suffering from headaches, various pains? Yoga therapy may be perfect for you. The article gives information about yoga therapy and provides basic data about meditation and healing properties of yoga.

Yoga dates back to the ancient India when four thousand years age people started to search for exercises that would relax both body and mind. In the beginning yoga was practiced only by monks called yogi who lived simple eremitic life filled with meditation.

The main goal of yoga is to relax the mind and find the way to control stress, negative emotions and unhealthy addictions. Only the mind that had achieved the state of calmness is able to concentrate and be active to reach spiritual development.

The connection of body and soul is crucial if we want to treat yoga as a way of gaining necessary energy. It is possible by:
- body control through the appropriate posture
- breath control through the proper breathing techniques
- ability to concentrate with mental techniques
Those rigorous techniques favor achievement and maintenance of the state of concentration that help to control both the body and breath. It is the physical effort which produces the energy that controls our whole life.

Yoga is used for two things:

- meditation - its main goal is to investigate the mystery of life and get to know a lot about yourself. It is a way to get to know the soul and your own character better. Meditation helps to detect important values for development of an individual, and discover inner strength that is able to combat all negative aspects of our life. It is a source for better and more creative life.
- therapy - it is targeted at people with emotional and heath problems. It can act as a strengthening or preventive therapy. Each therapy should be created specifically for an individual because people have different potentials and abilities.

BREATHING

Yoga is a system of relaxation techniques that calms down body and mind. It is based on the appropriate breathing which involves using the full potential of the lungs and therefore improving the energy, vitality and blood circulation. Appropriate breathing is a way of controlling psychological and physical properties of the organism. Exploiting the full potential of the lungs enables a person not only to strengthen them but also to reach full relaxation. A relaxed mind can achieve full concentration, calmness and spiritual development. Rhythmical breathing results in evoking vibrations that exist in harmony with nature, what helps to take the advantage of a person's inner powers. The control over breathing aids healing various diseases and emotional problems such as fear or nervousness. The research has shown that people can't breath properly, their breath is too fast and too shallow or too weak to exploit their own potential. Although yoga exercises are proved to alter the work of every single body part their main goal is to lead to the overall and general improvement of body condition. That is why it is not advised to practice yoga asans without breathing exercises (pranayama) and emotional or mental support. 'Breathing muscles' are the most important in the process of achieving the maximum amounts of life-giving air.

shallow breathing - according to yogi, it is the worst form which needs plenty of energy and gives no benefits
medium breathing - it is a better form then upper breathing, as it triggers movement of lower abdomen.
deep breathing - contains all positive elements of shallow, medium and deep breathing without their negative aspects. All breathing apparatus elements work but the energy loss is minimal. Deep breathing is the basis of yoga philosophy and it demands plenty of time and energy to learn appropriate techniques.

TRAINING

Yoga can be practised on your own or with an instructor in groups. The size of a group shouldn't be bigger than 15 - 20 people, the classes usually last from 1 to 2 hours. There are several sets of exercises with various levels of difficulty.
Proper exercises can be done if a person has got loose clothing and had gone through breathing and warm-up sessions that last around 15 minutes. It usually takes some time before a person learns how to make the yoga asans properly and it is crucial not to overstretch the body and realize one's abilities. Yoga intends to pull muscles slowly by accurate movements and holding posture without feeling of discomfort as long as possible.
It is important that a posture would be chosen to the person, not the other side round. You can always modify the posture when it is needed. Yoga teachers claim that spine is the most important support of our body so exercises are adapted to its abilities. A person should pay his attention to breathing as it is the condition with which soft, smooth movements reduce stress and give harmony.

The beginners find it difficult to breath through the nose, not the mouth. It is important to combine the length of breath with its depth, so it turns out that all yoga exercises require full concentration of the mind. People frequently close their eyes or count the length of breath in order to concentrate as much as possible. The training session lasts around 25 minutes and 20 minutes of relaxation follows.

MEDITATION

The appropriate chronology is also important for stimulating blood circulation and removing toxins from the organism. According to therapists toxins are responsible for aging and getting diseases as they block the energetic canals of the body.
The activities should be repeated at home, in a warm room with plenty of light and fresh air. The best part of the day is morning, two hours after eating. Yoga is a really simple form of exercising which can be learned from any manual. The biggest priority is given to the regularity of yoga exercising as daily dose of yoga helps to feel and look better. People who practise yoga feel relieved, relaxed and calm.

Yoga helps in the following diseases and conditions:
- fear and anxiety
- headaches, migraines
- high blood pressure
- backaches and neck aches
- asthma
- indigestion
- tiredness
- arthritis
- osteoporosis
- sexual dysfunctions
- pregnancy
