Dealing with stress, no matter it is evoked by work, college or exam is equally difficult. Emotional stress can bring both advantages and disadvantages because it can motivate and stimulate to action. Nevertheless, chronic stress needs to be dealt with to avoid health problems. The article gives some information about stress and lists tips on how to deal with stress.

From the medical point of view stress is the effect of producing by the pituitary gland of corticotropin hormone. A high level of this hormone triggers adrenal cortex to produce natural steroids - glucocorticoids. This is the substance that prepares the organism for various difficulties and problems. Psychologically speaking, stress is a reaction of the organism to the imbalance between our abilities and reality. Stress is an ordinary biological phenomenon.
'Good' stress
People need and optimal stress level in order to function and live properly. It stimulates actions, strengthens reactions and activates us, helps to cope with problems. When the stress level is reduced our motivation is immediately lower, we are bored and tired. Whereas, too high level of stress causes tension, problems with concentration, fear and chronic tiredness, it also slows down the reflex. It is a sign that our organism had already absorbed too much stimuli and reached the verge of its resistance.
'Bad' stress
Prolonged and traumatic stress are said to be the worst. They can cause neurosis or depression and lead to psychological problems and personality disorders. People can be exposed to excessive stress after the death of a relative, divorce, loss of job, disease or after....a wedding or childbirth. Severe stress causes many physical and psychical repercussions. We become stimulated, the blood pressure raises, breath and heart rate is fastened. We can suffer from headaches or stomachaches, mouth dryness or goosebumps. The sugar level in the blood is higher. When it comes to the psychological reactions - people suffer from fear, sadness, irritation, or even depression. We behave differently under the influence of stress, we smoke or eat more, overuse the alcohol. Some people tend to bite nails, sleep bad, irritate easily and avoid contacts with other people.
Prevention from stress
If you're bombarded by hormones responsible for stress, our organism is stuffed with high levels of adrenaline. It begins to fight against stress and that results in such diseases as coronary problems, heart attacks, arrhythmia, hypertension, gastric or duodenal ulcers, neurosis, reduced immunity or menstruation bleeding disorders.
What should we do to reduce stress?
- contact with nature, a walk in the forest or simple listening to bird singing
- relaxation techniques (yoga, meditation, breath control)
- sense of humor because laughing reduces stress
- realistic goals
- positive thinking
- herbs with tranquilizing effects
