In times of recession and bad weather outside people suffer from apathy and depression. This article intends to present information about apathy treatment and its causes.

Everyday activities such as eating and drinking are performed automatically. It is hunger and thirst which make people grab a sandwich or juice. There are conscious and subconscious needs which evoke such activities as thinking, work, rest, speaking. Some of them are done automatically whereas others are learned. This need of satisfying one's needs is triggered by the drive. The drive can be lowered or even reduced by plenty of physical or psychological disorders. The state is called apathy, in some severe cases it requires pharmacological treatment. Apathy, which symptoms include limiting the needs, leads to reducing one's activity, unwillingness to act and becoming indifferent towards any hobbies and interests. Apathy is also accompanied by the drop of feelings, some thoughts and beliefs are based on a feeling of resignation.

What are the causes of apathy?

As a consequence of diseases and mood swings a person can suffer from reduction of a drive, state of apathy and indifference. Of course, apathy can be an effect of such conditions as low blood pressure, poor blood circulation or diseases which result from low sugar levels. Apathy often attacks people who had gone through a serious physical disease or hard times. This state can be both cased by physical or psychical aspects. The feeling of resignation, depression deepen physical weakness, the apathy is also a sign of aging.

Fortunately, apathy is a temporal state which can be overcome by several activities e.g. socializing, searching for entertainment or simply trying to find signs of feeling better. Depression, on the other hand, is a disease which needs to be immediately treated by a psychiatrist and psychologist. The apathy can also be caused by an inborn disorder or a damage of the brain caused by a disease or an accident.

How can you treat apathy?

If the apathy is connected with the depression or mental problems, you should contact the psychologist who can prescribe antidepressants or tranquilizers. These methods usually bring a visible improvement in mental condition. Poor blood circulation which causes loss of energy or lo spirit can easily be stimulated to better work by a glass of wine. More serious disorders should be consulted with a doctor. Above all, the role of family and friends is crucial here, sometimes it's enough to show some care and interest for a person with apathy to feel better. In that way we can give them courage and strength for facing their problems.

When should we visit a doctor?

It's hard to say when to visit a doctor, it depends on each individual. Apathy can be triggered even by a bad mood or feeling unwell. However, if this state lasts several weeks, a visit to the doctor is crucial. It should be kept in mind that we suffer from a serious physical or mental diseases which gives such symptoms as depression or apathy.

What does a doctor do?

Each doctor will try to exclude physical diseases so be prepared to go through a series of tests which check the work of your heart and other organs. The treatment depends on the diagnosis, each condition demands other treatment.

How to cope with apathy on your own?

Before you visit a doctor it's good to try some home tricks which help combat depression. You can improve your mood by drinking herbal teas with sweet balm, valerian, currant, rosemary, artemisia and salvia.

What can you do?

What is the best medicine for apathy? It's obviously positive thinking and attitude to life. People who have a tendency to black thoughts and pessimism should learn how to think optimistically and fight with dark thoughts. You can achieve calmness and positive attitude through yoga, autohypnosis or affirmation. You won't have to suffer from sudden mood swings or poor weather any more.
