What makes us mad? The recent studies show that schizophrenics are more likely to have suffered from influenza in the womb than healthy people. Other common illnesses and experiences can also affect our mental health. A typical American lifestyle provides several risk factors for mental illness. All we can do is to start living our ancestors' lifestyle.

Modern life constantly exposes people to stress, we are bombed with emails, news, constant demands, information, etc. Certain parts of the brain react to stress and cause infections, avoiding people, inflammations and even brain damage, stress is called like an inflammation. But constant inflammation can cause serious harm e.g. heart disease, mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, autism, anxiety or bipolar disorder are linked to inflammation. Even though our ancestors didn't lead totally stress-free lives they had several habits that helped them relax and forget about the stressful lives. Physical exertion prevented from stress-inflammation, today we can't do anything but get more and more frustrated.
There are several steps we should follow not to get overwhelmed with stress and not to go mad about petty issues.
These are:
Omega fats
Eat both Omega 6 and Omega 3 fats, compounds found in Omega-6 can develop inflammation whereas Omega-3 are anti inflammatory and can help stop the inflammation caused by stress.
Sleep more
These days, many people sleep less than 7 hours whereas a century ago they would sleep about 9. This may be the cause of the decline of mental health. Try to get from 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night and you will feel better mentally.
Be good at something
It was easy to be good at something in small communities of the past. Nowadays it's hard to find something you're best at but if you find the niche your ego will grow stronger and your mental health would improve.
Avoid rumination
Rumination (analyzing problems over and over again) make people become in constant stress so focusing on a problem is not so good. If you start rumination you should find a company that would help you halt rumination. All in all, our ancestors rarely were alone.
Walk
Our ancestors spent plenty of time engaged in aerobic activity, they had to exercise regularly during their search for food, building huts or digging ditches. Nowadays, not many people exercise regularly, they prefer sitting in front of the computer and TV screen.
Learn a lot
Learn and try to have a global framework of what's going in the whole world, your knowledge will help you understand the scientific, religious or philosophical issues. This will keep you in good mental condition.
