Rear facing car seats are better than any others. Scientists suggest using rear-facing car seats up to the age of 4.

Switching to forward-facing seats can be dangerous and can lead to spinal injury in case of an accident. Even though parents believe they're doing well, they may put their children's life at risk. This was a result of the study published at the British Medical Journal website in which scientist advise parents keep young children in rear-facing seats as long as possible. Dr Elizabeth Watson and Dr Michael Monteiro claim this kind of seat is the safest for their children.
Data from Sweden where rear-facing seats is popular show that children die in accidents because they were sitting in forward-facing seats. That could be prevented if they were traveling in the other type of a seat. New crash tests also report that rear-facing seats protect a child from lower neck and chest injuries. This is because rear-facing seats keep the head, neck and spine protected and crash forces are distributed over all these areas of the body. The problem is that many parents don't even realize rear-facing seats exist.
