A protein in urine can be a sign of appendicitis, which is the most common emergency in children.

U.S. researchers from Children's Hospital Boston found that children with acute appendicitis had high levels of protein called leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein in their urine. So far, scientists tried to find a biomarker that could be used by physicians to diagnose appendicitis which was difficult to diagnose by modern imaging technology. The team used mass spectrometry to check concentrations of proteins in the urine of children and its link to appendicitis. The protein was in high levels in children with diseased appendices. Still, more study is needed to check whether this biomarker shows inflammation of appendices in adults.
