A new way of fighting against cancer has been discovered by a team of researchers. It can be done by using a new gene-scanning method and silencing genes that tumors need. This new cancer discovery can bring effective therapy closer.

Scientists found that previously known gene that prevents tumor cells from destroying themselves cannot be found at healthy cells. A second team also noticed a new genetic process unique for tumors. These discoveries may mean a new effective drug soon will be discovered. Gene mutations involve 30 percent of all cancers. The research shows how new ways to fight cancer can be discovered quickly if scientists interfere with RNA or RNAi.
For scientists it's extremely tough to know the mutation and not to be able to do something about it. An important part of cancer therapy is angiogenesis inhibition - preventing tumors from creating blood vessels that are crucial for their life. Scientists from Harvard and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute searched for other things tumor cells needed. In order to do that they used high-throughput RNAi to use small stretched of genetic material to slow down genes systematically. They also noticed that one type of gene called STK33 keeps cancer cells from self-destructing and this special gene is currently of main interest for scientists.
