You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / News / Honey and Brown Sugar

Honey and brown sugar isn't better than white one but you can always eat a bar of chocolate.

Each person eats 88lb of sugar each year, which means that through the lifetime we consume 1.75 tonnes. Each year companies all around the world produce 180 million tonnes of refined sugar. And we still eat lots of sugar even though nutritionists warn its high consumption is linked to the heart disease. The newest research suggests that a high sugar intake increases the risk of heart attack by 30 percent in post-menopausal women. Sweets make our food more comforting and pleasurable, but it's pure carbohydrates which contain as much as 20 calories per 5g teaspoon. Dietitians don't worry about sugars that are found in fruits but they are more concerned about the sugar added to drinks that increase calorie consumption and develop tooth decay.
The Food Standards Agency claim that we shouldn't eat more than ten percent of daily calorie intake - it's about 50g to 60g. However, we should try consume foods that provide sugar naturally - fruits or eat a small chocolate bar. Sugar we add to our diet includes table sugar, fizzy drinks, beer and chocolate for men, chocolate and fruit juice for women.
Brown sugar and honey are not healthier alternatives to white sugar, they contain some minerals which don't contribute much to our diet. Fructose included in the light brown and dark brown sugar are converted into fat and raise blood cholesterol levels. The fructose in high amounts boosts uric acid levels and increases the risk of gout and worsens irritable bowel syndrome. The more sugar you eat, the heavier you become. Sugars found in drinks seem to be invisible calories which in turn lead to the cardiovascular disease.
