Do you remember a movie in which Jennifer Lopez said that she eats only brown M&Ms because they look more natural? Plenty of parents are also afraid the coloring may the worst part of these popular sweets.

The fact is that the coloring may bring unexpected benefits we have never expected. Scientists discovered that the food dye can help patients with spine injuries. The compound is called Brilliant Blue G and it blocks a chemical that may make injuries even more severe by causing inflammation and destroying cells. The treatment with Brilliant Blue G reduces the size of lesions and improves recovery. However, laboratory rats' skin turned temporarily blue. An important aspect is also to inject the color dye quickly after a trauma appears.
What might be surprising, the coloring reduced the injury significantly so that the rats were able to walk again. Those rats had never received the treatment never regained the ability to walk. According to the researcher Dr Steven Goldman this could lead to finding a safe agent which would decrease the secondary damage usually expected in spinal injuries. Further research is essential to prove the efficiency of the Brilliant Blue G.
