You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Neurology / Back Pains

Pains in lower, middle and upper back are not considered to be diseases but they are described as medical conditions,or generally, as back pains. They can affect most of the people, women during pregnancy and sportsmen. What are the remedies which will help relieve the chronic and severe pain, what are its causes and what exercises are advised for back pains?

Causes

Back pains are caused by a vicious circle in which muscles are much more tense than it is beneficial for them. Such pains make muscles tense which make it impossible for intervertebral discs to regenerate sufficiently to work properly. This way the cooperation of discs is impaired and muscle try to make up for that disorder. That is why, they become even more tense. And the story begins over ad over again.

Such condition is a sign of imbalance between tension and relaxation. The term "posture" does not only describe the person's posture but also his/her mental condition. These two elements influence each other, a change of posture affects psychological condition and a change of psychological conditions affects the posture.

Risk factors

Mobile parts of the spine and such elements which carry the heaviest burden usually wear out quite early. With age, spines of most of the people get used which does not mean that they are ill so everyone is at risk of suffering from back pains.

Complications

Damaged spine parts can press the nerves. The tendons, nerves and veins joined to the muscles trigger pains to remote body parts. Therefore, different diseases may appear: these include headaches, pains in the forearms, lower legs, loss of vision, hearing and balance.

Prevention

The spine is kept in right position not only by back muscles but also by stomach muscles. That is why people who practice sports are more likely to overcome problems with back and loin pains than those who don't practice sports at all. The prevention depends on the amount of exercising you get. The more sport in your life the smaller possibility that you have problems with your back. Because of the fact that the load is heavier when stomach muscles are flabby prevention should concentrate on strengthening stomach muscles and stretching back muscles. Such exercising should be be done slowly and under doctor's control. Attention should be paid to the lower back - it must be straight all the time, such posture makes stomach muscles tense and helps to prevent from excessive concavity of lower back.

What is good for your spine?

- Exercises that require keeping balance - stand on one leg and move one arm or leg. Yoga exercises also help in maintaining good body posture.
- Walking up and down the stairs with a book on the head - at least twice a day for 20 minutes.
- Crawl swimming
- Standing on a see-saw

How to take care of your spine?

1. Change your posture frequently into such which you don't often use. This will take the burden from the most loaded joints.
2. Keep the appropriate height of tables and chairs. It means that your hips, knee and elbow joints can be at a right angle.
3. If it is necessary, change your working place.
4. While reading or watching TV lie on the stomach
5. Sleep without a pillow on a hard mattress
6. Don't carry too much burden
7. Don't pick up heavy objects with straight arms, bend your knees for that
8. Carry heavy object in both arms.

What sports are good for the spine?

Swimming, volleyball, basketball, cross-country skiing, gymnastics.
