There are plenty of food storage containers: glass, plastic, insulated, collapsible, metal or steel. Which ones are safe and what should we take into consideration when buying one? Read the article below.

Material of a food container

The best containers are made of glass or plastic. There are also wooden, metal and ceramic containers in the market. Those made of wood have porous structure which is a perfect place for plenty of bacteria. If we decide to buy a glass container we should ensure that the container is heatproof. In such case, apart from storing food, we will be able to warm the food up or freeze it inside. When it comes to plastic containers we should choose those made of polypropylene or polycarbonate as they are more durable and flexible.

What shape to choose

The shape of a desired container depends on our needs. Do we want to store several slices of ham or cheese, or do we plan to store larger quantities of food? We should remember though that plenty of space inside a container means quicker decay of food, as a consequence of the presence of the air inside. Small containers with rounded edges are the most comfortable because they can be carried even in a purse without risking damaging it.

The cover

The cover must be ideally fitted to the box because if it's untight all bacteria will easily get inside. Most of the containers should be opened quickly after they had been closed to let the air out, and then closed again.

The bottom

The bottom of the container should be wavy or with a special insertion which would prevent products from contact with water and fluids. This ensures a longlasting freshness of products which can loose vitamins, important nutrients and above all, freshness when touching water.

The best option is to choose certified containers, with a note that they had been approved to be used for food. A certificate guarantees safety of food storage and makes us sure the product fulfills the requirements. The bottom of the container should have a mark stating it can be used for storing food. It should also be created in such a way that the change of temperature won't trigger it to emit substances dangerous to health.
