You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Lifestyle / Relieve from Stress

These days stress becomes one of the commonest complaint of all nations, many of us try to get relief from workplace stress, argues or quarrels at home. Coping with stress seems to be difficult but its management does not have to be impossible. Read the tips how to escape from this terrifying monster.

It is said to be the saber-toothed tiger which destroys our lives slowly but very effectively. The symptoms of stress are common: pounding heart, sweating, shortness of breath, muscles become tight, something is ringing in your ear, you've got splitting headache and your senses are sharper than ever before. No this isn't a battlefield or a fight your body is getting ready to, it's just your work or home. The high level of cortisol may be motivating for a short period of time, when it is prolonged it causes serious health problems. It may result in high blood pressure, asthma, depression or even cancer.

There are certain things you should try to do before you get into the arms of stress.

1. Don't take up too many chores

Let go of what you can't do, control or you are not good at. You can plan the things ahead, give yourself more time than ever before on doing things at work and outside your workplace. Treat your right to plenty of sleep as though it was one of your chores or responsibilities. You may have noticed that after receiving enough sleep you have more strength to face everyday problems.

2. Avoid information overload

Don't get caught in the negative hail of news which is so popular in TV news, in the Internet. You should moderate your TV and Internet time and avoid spending too much of it on reading the loads of accessible information, it is said that there are around 550 billion documents, you don't have to know them all. Although the TV and media keep you informed, they also make you worry too much.

3. Kiss a lot

Kissing relieves stress, increases the level of endorphins. Psychiatrists from the Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine claim that kissing relieves stress. Next time when you come back home, kiss your wife or husband and your stress levels will be reduced.

4. Hug

Hold your hands, let nerve endings under the skin send message to calm down. University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found out that one of the greatest way to combat stress is to hold hands and hug. And it doesn't matter who you hug, a friend will do too.

5. Drink green tea

Find the ritual to drink a cup of tea, stop for a moment and relax a little bit. My friend, who runs quite a successful company and works from 8 to 9p.m. says that she wouldn't survive without those tiny tea breaks. When she drinks tea she is unavailable to the whole world, nobody has the right to interrupt her. L-Theanine is able to change the beta state of your brain (which evokes anxiety) into alpha (responsible for relaxation).

6. Affirm your values

When you think about things that are important to you in stressful situations you feel that you can face almost everything. Treat problems like a challenge, not an obstacle. Don't take every mistake personally and remember that there's not a perfect answer or not a perfect person. You should also see problems as opportunities this way you can combat them more effectively. Concentrate on some great memory from your holidays or day-dream for a while to see what's going on. I use this technique often: there's a photo from holidays on my desk which reminds me that I'm working to have money to go on holiday.
