You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Holidays / How to Survive a Heat Wave

The article presents tips and tricks on how to survive a heat wave in the city. Read it and try to enjoy the summer.

When temperature rises above 25 degrees of Celsius our everyday living becomes much more difficult than ever before. It's much harder to work, concentration is hindered, we feel weary and we lack energy. Heat is extremely dangerous for young children, elderly, people with diabetes, hypertension and other heart diseases.
There are several suggestion on how to survive the heatwave.
- your organism perspires and sweats so it looses huge amounts of water, more than usual. That is why you should drink more liquids, preferably mineral water, vegetable and fruit juice, tea. Avoid sweet or sweetened drinks, alcohol and coffee because they make perspiration faster
- wear loose clothes made of cotton or linen, avoid clothes made of synthetic materials and those with dark colors
- invest in light shoes, sandals, mules or flip-flops, those made of natural leather are better for your feet than those made of synthetic materials
- take care of your personal hygiene, if it's necessary take a shower several times a day, use antiperspirants
- if you go shopping, choose shops and shopping precincts with air conditioning
- drink refreshing drinks e.g. apple juice with mint
- use sun creams with filters
- reduce physical activity to the minimum, walk slowly
- cover your head with a hat or a cap and sunglasses to avoid conjunctivitis
- remember that prolonged exposure to sun and high temperatures increases the risk of getting the sun-stroke, its symptoms include: fever, nausea, headaches, dizziness, shivers and loss of consciousness
- search for parks, squares and cafe-gardens
- resign from hot fatty dinners, prepare something light e.g. cold vegetable soup or a salad. Eat seasonal fruit especially watermelon because it is really refreshing. Eat less but more often
- use window blinds and curtains
- if you don't have to, try not to go out from home between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
- apply cooling gels on tired and swollen legs
- remember to moisture your face and the whole body, use bronzing creams, spray your face with thermal water, use tissues which absorb the sweat
- be responsible when using air conditioning in the office and in the car because your organism doesn't like sudden temperature changes and you can get cold
- if it's possible take a day off and go to the swimming pool or over the lake
It's a good idea to swim in rivers, lakes and pools but you should remember to swim only in places where it's not forbidden. Go into the water slowly, despite high temperatures in the air water in large water basins may be cold so you risk getting heat-stroke. Don't lie in the sun for the whole day, go for a walk in the forest, search for some shadow. You can install small fountains and plastic swimming pools in home gardens, they will be extremely attractive for children.
We are waiting for warm months with anticipation and impatience. When the summer comes, we should enjoy the sun, warm wind and holiday journeys but when we are forced to spend summer in the city use all possible ways which help survive the heatwave.
