You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Diseases / Hypochondria

Those who have a hypochondriac in their families will know how hard it is to cope with this illness. Funny as it seems, it may deprive a person of the whole joy of living.

The symptoms of hypochondria include constant anxiousness about one's health and suspecting oneself to suffer from various diseases, usually quite serious. Apart from that, a person suffering from hypochondria searches for doctor's help all the time and tends to take plenty of medicines, even those excluding each other. Hypochondria can have a nervous background or it may derive from features of character such as anxiety, compulsive behavior and tendency to suffer from depression. It may also be a sign of phobias in depression or absurd hypochondriac delusions occurring in serious mental illnesses e.g. schizophrenia. Hypochondriacs don't believe in psychological nature of their problems so suggestions they should refer to psychologist and psychiatrist insult them.
Causes:
The cause of hypochondria lies in the mind, it is an attempt to attract someone's attention, it's a call for love, care and understanding. Sometimes it is very difficult to admit that. A disease may be also our alibi, excuse for laziness, drop in strength and loss of the drive. In the world of rat race and search for success it's easier to say "I'm ill" rather than "I don't feel like doing something", we even don't want to admit it to ourselves that we are lazy. Primarily innocent excuses throw us into the vicious circle of fear and fatal mood which actually produce symptoms similar to those in some diseases.
Treatment:
People who suffer from depression or nervosis are advised to take antidepressants and take part in psychological therapy. In other cases hypochondria can't be treated pharmacologically. Patients need meetings with the psychologist.
5 steps to your health:
1. Throw away or hide all medical books and magazines, don't dare read them.
2. Find one doctor you trust and contact him in case of any health disorders.
3. Don't overuse medications, take only those prescribed by your doctor.
4. Don't talk about illnesses nor engage people in your problems with health.
5. Everyday do something you love and do something to spite your illnesses.
