Do you feel itching under your eyelids, your eyes are red and when you go outside they water heavily? Check what causes common eye problems and learn how to get rid of eye itchiness.

Irritating itching

Symptoms:

At first, you feel severe itching, then your eyes are reddened, eyelids swollen, in the corners of your eyes a sticky, mucous substance appears. The symptoms develop very quickly, their cause lies on allergic reaction to an allergen - pollen, fur, cosmetic, medication or food. This allergic reaction often includes such symptoms as runny nose, dry cough or wheezing breath.

What can you do:

Place wet tissues on your eyes, or take droplets of "fake tears" which are supposed to remove allergens.

When to visit a doctor:

If after two or three days your symptoms don't recede, you should visit a ophthalmologist. Doctor will prescribe antihistamine medications or steroid and non-steroid anti inflammatory drugs as well as send you for a consultation with an allergist who will diagnose the problem.

"Stuck together" eyelids may not be cause by infection

Symptoms:

Your conjunctiva is reddened and pus gathers in the eye corners. In the morning, secretion is profuse which makes eyelids stick to each other and opening eye impossible. This is a bacterial inflammation of conjunctiva which can also be associated with purulent catarrh, throat infection or even bronchitis. It is possible, especially in children, that a person wiping his nose carries micro-organisms into the eyes. Usually, on eye gets infected and after that, the infection develops in the second.

What to do:

Rinse your eyes with warm, boiled water to remove the fluid. When going out you should remember to take sunglasses - they protect eyes from getting irritated by the sun, wind and dust. Wear them until your eyes are healthy.

When to the doctor:

The faster, the better. When you notice a purulent secretion you should visit a practitioner. Bacterial inflammation can damage your vision. Your doctor will prescribe antibiotics and ointments you should use.

Severe itching is a sign of dry eyes

Symptoms:

You feel as though sand get stuck under your eyelids, conjunctiva is swollen and red.

What to do:

Ventilate the rooms you spend your time in, use professional air humidifiers. Remember to wink your eyes when you read, watch TV or work at the computer. You will moisturize your eyes.

When to the doctor:

Apply so called "fake tears" into your eyes at least a couple of times a day. If after several days of using you still have problems with itching visit your practitioner or ophthalmologist.
