Brain concussion or in other words head injury concussion is a damage of the brain that can cause serious complications. The article presents information about brain concussion, its symptoms and treatment.

Brain concussion is a dangerous condition in which brain gets a severe blow due to the injury of the head and the body. It makes the brain work abnormally and react strangely. Although this condition doesn't have to give obvious symptoms such as fainting, feeling unwell, concussion can cause serious problems. It can result in problems with speaking, seeing or movement. Concussion happens when a cushion made of spinal fluid that protects your brain is unable to prevent this soft organ from hitting the hard skull.
Symptoms of a concussion
If you have any symptoms of concussion you should immediately stop the activities of any kind, sports since this can bring about much more severe brain injury. You should contact your doctor immediately after noticing any signs of this condition. The symptoms include:
- unable to remember what happened during the injury
- inability to concentrate
- blurry vision, ringing in the ears
- inability to walk or stand
- feeling nausea and vomiting
- problems with coordination and finding balance
Sometimes, a given person suffers from bigger problems than before the injury, this is often called the post-concussive syndrome. The symptoms of post-concussive syndrome include:
- frequent headaches,
- different sleep patterns than before the injury e.g. inability to sleep or constant sleepiness
- personality changes e.g. becoming moody or angry all the time
- losing interest in ordinary activities
- lack of taste or smell
- losing interest in sex
- feeling nauseous, lightheaded, vomiting, sometimes a sick person feels that objects around are spinning, falling or tilting
Usually the doctor diagnoses by asking questions, testing strength, balance and coordination to check if bran works normally. Sometimes a CT scan or MRI to check if brain isn't bleeding or swollen.
How to treat concussion?
There's no specific treatment that exists, it's usually based on symptoms. Family and friends should watch such a person closely to check if there were no changes of behavior, taking painkillers is also advisable for people who suffer from headaches. The best thing that should be done is taking plenty of rest and sleep. Above all, patients should avoid any activities that could cause the second brain injury. It is also good to go back to return to the daily routine slowly and let yourself relax as much as possible. In case of worsening a person's condition patient can be sent to hospital to be under constant control of doctors.
The term concussion refers to four types of injuries: mild brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury, mild head injury and minor head trauma. If concussions are repeated they can cause a serious brain damage and severe complications.
The concussion may be prevented by wearing helmets, seat belts in cars and taking all the safety measures that are required in a given environment.
