You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Dietetics / Healthy Drinks

Healthy drinks help you stay in health, keep energy and provide appropriate nutritional and protein levels. Fruit and vegetable drinks taste delicious and you are able to find plenty of quick and healthy recipes for smoothies in the Internet.

What you drink influences your health and health of your family. If you have entered this site you probably realize that sodas, energy and sweet drinks destroy our health. You may also agree that they are to blame for the epidemic of obesity among children and lower the amount of nutrients absorbed by the organism. What should you do? Is there anything you can do to improve your family's health? First of all, inform your kids and husband or wife about dental problems and weight gain caused by the consumption of sodas and sweetened drinks. And above all, provide your family with healthy alternatives.

1. Water

Start giving your child water at an early age, this way you will teach your child to accept low-flavor, unsweetened beverage that fights thirst. Water is not only calorie-free but also it has no sugar or sweeteners that would raise your blood sugar levels. It doesn't matter whether it's still or fizzy, flavored or not water makes a perfect healthy choice. Encourage children to take bottles of mineral water everywhere by stressing that many sports and pop stars can be seen walking with a bottle in their hand. If they still don't want to drink plain water you can try adding slices of fresh fruit into the bottle, e.g. lime, citrus fruit, cucumber or watermelon. Encourage drinking water everywhere and every time your family members are thirsty.

2. Milk

Milk can be a perfect thirst-quencher and it also contains calcium which contributes to your child's daily calcium needs. The best milk you should choose is low-fat, fat-free or soy milk (the last one especially good for various ear and sinus infections), this will complete the lacks of calcium and protein in our diet. Drinking a cup of cow's milk provides us with 30% of the daily value for calcium. Calcium is very important as it protects colon cells from chemicals and prevents from headaches. It turned out that milk helps lose weight especially in the stomach area, prevents from premenstrual syndrome and above all, reduces the risk of osteoporosis in the adult age. If your child tries to avoid milk because he or she doesn't like its taste you can add some flavor to the glass of milk e.g. chocolate or strawberry flavor won't make a great difference to sugar intake.

3. 100 % fruit juice

100 percent juice means juice without sugar, juice is a healthy drink alternative because it contains vitamins from fruit. Unfortunately, you should put limits on juice consumptions since it contains lots of natural sugars. You can dilute juice with water

4. Vegetable juice

Vegetable juices contain lots of antioxidants e.g. vitamin A or C and many nutrients that have beneficial influence on our organisms. They are very low in sugar so there is no reason to worry about the calorie intake.

5. Unsweetened tea

Homemade iced teas and hot herbal teas are fantastic low-calorie drinks (if unsweetened they contain 0 calories) which have the ability e.g. to reduce the cholesterol level and reduce the risk of cancer. Some herbal or fruit teas have already sweet taste so they will taste better, there are so many options of flavors to try from that you can easily spend months on tasting and choosing the one you love and adore. Herbal teas can also have certain healing properties. Green tea is said to be the best dietary supplement and hydrator. Green tea is not oxidized that is why its color is so light and pale. Green tea contains polyphenols which give a slightly bitter taste to the tea, they are said to contain antioxidant effects. Catechins present in green tea are responsible for its stimulating effects. It has beneficial effects in battles against cancers, improve mental and intellectual abilities. Vitamin C present in green tea reduces stress and prevents flu. Theanine makes proper neural function and vitamin E prevents from aging.

6. Sports drink

They are advertised widely and lots of marketing is put into their promotion. Although they don't contain lots of calories they're not calorie-free. You should drink them occasionally as they don't carry nutritional benefits of vegetable and fruit juices.

Above all, you should avoid colas, sodas and other juice drinks which contain so much sugar that you wouldn't normally consume. They are negative effects on bone structure, obesity and lack dietary value.
