You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Children / Teaching about Sex to Kids

Talking to kids about sex is difficult and tiring, parents often don't know what to say about sex. Teaching about sex to kids doesn't have to be a total disaster.

What should a kindergarten pupil know?
- each part of the body has its name and purpose
- in the future girls will be moms whereas boys will be dads
- both a woman and a man are essential for conception
- children grow inside mom's stomach in the uterus
- man is crucial for conception but only a woman can bore a child
- mom and dad are very important or each baby
- boys have penis and scrotum
- girls have vagina and vulva

3-6 years old

3 to 6 year-olds begin to realize that girls and boys bodies differ, they discover the fact of being a boy or girl. If your child asks questions, tell him that you're happy about that. Explain that children grow in mom's body, this place is called the uterus. Tell him/her that there is an egg in woman's body whereas man's body has many seeds called spermatozoons. Only when the two meet, a child can develop inside woman's body. What if your child isn't asking? Begin the talk on your own, use any excuse possible.

6-9 years old

These are the years of intense growing. Your child will hear more about sex from the peers than parents. Your child is interested in the period of pregnancy and delivery. It will be better if you explain the sense of sexual intercourse stressing that it concerns adults and is closely linked to love.

9-12 years old

This is a period of many turbulent changes. Your child should be prepared for them, so don't make a secret from your menstrual period, don't treat it as an embarrassing thing. Talk to your daughter as much as possible and describe everything to her.

Dads should talk to their sons, it is important to explain them that it is normal to have strange voice and body disproportions. They should warn them that one morning they can wake up in wet bedclothes: nocturnal pollution is a thing they should not be embarrassed about.

There is always a good moment to give your child a good book that explains everything and encourage your child to ask questions.
