You are in: Main Page / Medical articles / Children / Kids and Nutrition

The article presents facts about kids and nutrition which is best for them. A sensible diet and plenty of exercises ensures the success in keeping slim body and above all, health. Read it and teach your child healthy living.

Proper diet for children

When your child begins school it is quite a hard time for him/her to adapt to a new environment and new daily routine. His or her life changes completely, because of the fact that your child gets new difficult tasks at school his diet and eating habits are bound to change too. Diet of a 6-7 year-old child can't be deprived of wholesome calcium. It is crucial for building all body elements. Diet should also contain carbohydrates which provide a young organism with energy and fatty acids which take part in building cell membranes or brain development. Your child should also get important nutritional elements, e.g. calcium, iron and vitamin D.

That is why the second breakfast can't be replaced with crisps, chocolate bars, sweet sodas children usually buy at school canteen. These products give plenty of "empty calories" to the organism which means they have nothing the organism needs. On the other hand, they bring risk of becoming obese or overweight. Such diet may cause inappropriate physical and mental development of your child.

What should a child eat?

Children who have problems with maintaining their proper weight can be divided into two groups: those with genetic tendency to become obese and those who become overweight as a result of following improper diet. You should pay attention to children with family record of obesity. They may need a constant care of a doctor or dietitian as creating an individual diet becomes crucial for keeping proper weight. The rest of fat children, who aren't genetically susceptible to obesity, can blame their parents for their look.

It often happens that parents who live in a constant hurry give their child some money for a doughnut or chocolate bar instead of preparing a sandwich for school. Apparently, some children who begin their school education are already obese because they gained weight in an early childhood. Parents tend to feel ashamed if their child is too slim, they are afraid that someone will accuse them of lack of interest in their child. As a result, parents make sure their son or daughter eat well and look 'healthy'. In consequence, children get overweight or even obese. In such situation it is difficult to reduce weight. Young children should eat 5 meals a day, at regular intervals. They can't eat snacks between the meals, in case of any hunger they may eat an apple or any other fruit.

After the first breakfast at home the child should have energy for 2-3 hours because the morning is the part of the day when your child works hard. It doesn't have to be a sandwich with a ham, it can be apple or a carrot as well. Mineral water is the healthiest drink. Children who just take money for school usually buy something which their friends buy or simply a product which is trendy or popular. They don't know which products are good for them and which are unhealthy. They usually choose product which contain plenty of sugar, salt and fatty acids. Not only do they get fat but also ill. Of course, sweets are allowed from time to time but you should keep it in mind that a home-made cake is better than a chocolate bar.
