You are in: Main Page / List of diseases / Litera U / Uterine Fibroids

Description of disease:

Uterine fibroids are benign tumors which don't develop any symptoms, they affect 20% of all women. Fibroids aren't life threatening, small ones demand regular medical control especially in young girls, doctors treat young girls with hormones. Large fibroids are surgically removed and only small percent of them turns into malignant tumors e.g. sarcoma. If it grows quickly it may be suspected to be a cancerous tumor that is why all fast growing fibroids need to be quickly removed in a surgical procedure. fibroids have the peak presentation for adult women between 35 and 45 and are caused by hormonal imbalance and disorders.

They usually appear in groups of several fibroids of various sizes. There are three types of fibroids categorized according to the place and size:

1) subserous - placed outside the uterus, they grow towards serous membranes
2) intramural - placed inside the uterus
3) submucosal - grow towards mucous membranes of the uterus
