Description of disease:

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation of the large intestine and its lining (mucous membranes) that cause sores. The disease increases the risk of cancer of large intestine. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects rectum, it is more common in the large bowel. Diet is very important during medical treatment, so it is advisable to limit the consumption of cellulose and milk. When the disease proceeds it leads to dehydration and anemia that is why food is given directly into the intestine. Deficiencies of water, calcium, electrolytes or blood are supplemented intravenously.
The disease usually affects people between the ages of 20 to 40, sometimes within the same family.
The causes of ulcerative colitis are unknown.
