You are in: Main Page / List of diseases / Litera T / Tick-borne Meningoencephalitis

Description of disease:

Tick-borne meningoencephalitis or a tick-borne viral infection is an acute infectious disease affecting the nervous system. The virus responsible for the development of the disease is called flavivirus. Tick-borne is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks which live in grass, bushes, forests and meadows. Ticks attack people's ears, head, joints and places where hands or legs bend. People don't feel bites because the ticks' saliva has got anesthetizing effect. There are two stages of the disease:
1) 1st stage - symptoms appear after 7-14 days from the infection and they are very similar to flu signs: fever, chills. These signs last for about one week
2) 2nd stage - patients suffer from headaches, vomiting, nausea or loss of consciousness.
The disease recedes after 2 or 3 weeks after appropriate treatment. The best way to prevent from tick-borne meningencephalitis is to wear clothes that cover as much body areas as possible, boil milk that comes from cows, goats and sheep. After each trip to the forest it is crucial to examine body closely and remove all ticks with tweezers. It's important to disinfect the skin afterwards.
Preventive vaccinations are advisable for all people working in forests, tourists, teenagers and soldiers that are stationed in forests. Ticks attack intensely twice a year in June, July and October.
