Subacute thyroiditis is an infection of thyroid glands arising from viruses. The causes include viruses of flu, mumps, mononucleosis or Echo virus in people who are genetically predisposed to this disease. There are two stages of subacute thyroiditis: the symptoms such as fever, fatigue, enlarged thyroid gland last for about 1-2 months. During the second stage all the symptoms disappear, thyroid glands are no longer painful and hypothyroidism begins. After some time, the stage also recedes and thyroid glands start to function normally. Sometimes, a tumor in the thyroid gland appears but the disease may recurr after several years.
