Description of disease:

Serous otitis media is an infection which is the most common cause of severe pain in the ear. The disease affects children and new-born babies because their Eustachian tube is developing and is unable to carry fluid from the air. The infection is developing quickly.

The main causes are bacteria which enter the Eustachian tube through the throat or it may be a complication of other diseases such as sinusitis, angina, flu, rhinitis or measles.

If untreated, serous media otitis may lead to irreversible damages e.g. loss of hearing or meningoencephalitis.
