Description of disease:
Sciatica is a combination of symptoms rather than a disease characterized by the severe attacks of acute pain irradiating from the lower back, buttock to various parts of the leg and even foot. The pain is intense, sharp and severe and is usually the result of irritation of nerve roots.
The main causes of sciatica include any disease of intervertebral disc, inflammations, infectious diseases, diabetes or cancers. The disease affects mostly people aged over 30 years old but is also possible to happen in people of all ages. The symptom of sciatica always include severe, awful, agonizing pain which shoots after sudden movements or lifting some weight. The pain may be so strong and agonizing that it makes any movement very painful. Muscle tension, limb lifting or flexing, head nodding or bending may even cause more severe pain attacks. In order to avoid pain strengthening a patient usually creates a position of bended lower limbs and flexure of the spine and avoids any movements.
The disease may recur but its duration depends on each individual and causes of the disease. The treatment involves resting, taking non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers. Sometimes rehabilitation and surgical procedures are essential.
