Raynaud's syndrome which is often divided into Raynaud's phenomenon or Raynaud's disease is a condition that gives the same symptoms characterized by fingers and toes going white or turning blue. The fingers and toes become stiff for about 15 minutes, the stiffness recedes after a massage of a given finger. People sometimes feel shooting pains in their toes and fingers. Raynaud's disease does not cause any changes to skin or other tissues because stiffness is caused by arteries that bring blood to fingers when exposed to cold or strong emotions. Raynaud's phenomenon, on the other hand, may be a signal of other diseases such as scleroderma, artery diseases, poisonings, side effect of drugs lowering blood pressure. The disease affects women most often. Raynaud's disease does not develop quickly whereas Raynaud's phenomenon causes scarring or ulceration of tissues. What should you do to reduce the attacks? Keep the hands and legs warm, avoid tight shoes and follow a low-fat diet.
