Description of disease:
Pneumothorax is a disease in which the air and gases become collected around lungs. It is a sudden, acute disease which demands immediate surgical procedure.
There are several types of pneumothorax:
- traumatic pneumothorax - occurs after an injury to the pleura
- spontanous pneumothorax - is caused when the air gets to the pleura, for young people it does not have any known reasons whereas for people with other lung disease it is usually caused by the crack of emphysematous bleb, it is life-threatening condition
- open pneumothorax - it is caused by injury to the chest which results in open wound that is connected with pleura. Pressure in pleura is lower from the atmospheric pressure and that is why the increased pressure in the lung cavity becomes life threatening,
- pnuemothorax simplex - it is associated with single air flow into the lung cavity. It is usually caused the crack in the emphysematous bleb or destruction of lung parenchyma due to the chest injury. A slight pneumothorax simplex does not demand any treatment,
- valvular pneumothorax - or tension pneumothorax is caused by the crack in a small fragment of lung tissue which makes the air get into the pleura. Each breath enlarges the amount of gases around lungs, therefore lung expansion is impaired.
Symptoms:
