Description of disease:
Obsessive compulsive disorder (DCO) is a disorder of fears in which patients worry about certain things too much. From 2 to 3 percent of the population suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. It is characterized by the obsession and compulsion.
Obsession is an obsessive, constant worry one cannot get rid of. There are several categories of the disease:
- obsession of doubts - the analysis of once made decisions
- obsessive feeling of making a mistake - nagging thoughts about mistakes and errors made in the past
- religious obsession - occurs in religious people, nagging thoughts and visions that shatter peace, they appear during prayers
- sexual obsession - they appear during intimate situations, they include erotic thoughts and visions.
Compulsions are the nagging activities that a patient compulsively performs over and over again because the lack of them provokes discomfort and fear. These activities usually take a lot of time and the patient keeps doing them despite the disapproval of the people around. The most frequent compulsions include:
- cleaning and washing - frequent hand and body washing, cleaning clothes or house for fear of bacteria
- controlling and checking all the activities e.g. making sure that the door were locked, the light, ovens and cookers switched off
- tidying and arranging things - everything should be put in an irrational order, putting any object in any other place causes more tidying
- counting - constant counting everything around
- moving - a specific way of walking e.g. omitting certain flagstones
