Description of disease:
Mumps is an infectious disease which is characterized by painful swelling of the salivary glands, neck and the lower jaw. The virus is highly contagious and spreads very easily. The disease is passed on from person to person in the droplet infection throughout coughing, sneezing or using the same cutlery or crockery. After 18 hours from getting infected a patient suffers from slightly raised temperature, sore throat, shivers and feeling unwell. The salivary glands become swollen usually after one day, at first on one sight, later on on the other site. Although the high temperature recedes after several days the glands remain swollen for several days more. The disease makes chewing and swallowing painful, especially of sour products e.g. lemon juice.
Men should pass the disease in their early childhood years because its complications may have detrimental effect on them e.g. testes edema which results in infertility. The complication which may happen regardless the age include: deafness, cerebrospinal meningitis, encephalitis, arthritis, pancreatitis, carditis, or blood circulatory system disorders. Thank to the vaccine mumps is no longer a common disease but there are still cases of people who were infected by the disease due to the lack of immunization to mumps.
Diagnosis of the disease is done in doctor's examination, sometimes it is good to make blood cell count determination test.
The treatment is only symptomatic but the patient should be isolated from other people until regression of the symptoms. It is advisable to take some painkillers in order to reduce the pain of salivary glands. If any signs of the complications appear it is crucial to visit the doctor. These include: high fever, vomiting, testicles infections and edemas, headaches and neck stiffness.
Children don't have to stay in bed if the symptoms are mild but they should avoid strenuous physical activity. Doctors claim that children should be given lots of liquids, bouillon, soups, soft and smashed products such as bananas, scrambled eggs, puddings or gellatine desserts. If the testicles edema appears patient has to stay in bed, apply cold compress on testes.
The vaccine against mumps is given to 15-month old children, the next dose is given to 10-11 year-old boys. People who plan a journey to places where there's a possibility of infection should receive a vaccine. It is not advisable for pregnant women and people with weak immune system.
