Description of disease:

Malignant melanoma is an malignant cancer of skin, mucous membranes or uvea that develops from pigment cells which produce melanin, melanocytes. Melanoma is characterized by quick growth, early and numerous metastases and pessimistic prognoses.

The risk factors which have an influence on the development of malignant melanoma are:

- long-lasting exposure to the sun and UVA rays
- sun-burns in the childhood
- congenital nevuses
- a big number of pigmented nevus
- fair skin complexion, blond or red hair, blue eyes and numerous freckles
- melanoma cases in the family
- earlier example of melanoma in the same patient
