/ Hirsutism

Description of disease:
 Hirsutism is also called a pathological hair growth in women and it is characterized by the excessive hair growth in places typical for men e.g. upper lip, beard, chest, stomach or inner thighs.
The causes of the hirsutism include:
- abnormal level of androgens - male hormones
- inherited abnormal production of steroid hormones
- pregnancy - due to increased hormone productions
- tumors e.g in the ovaries or adrenal glands
There may be two types of hirsutism:
- idiopathic in which the hormone levels are normal (occurs most often)
- secondary hirsutism can be caused by tumors of the ovaries, polycystic ovary syndrome, adrenal tumors, type II of diabetes, or it can be caused by some medications such as: testosterone, anti-inflammatory drugs, anabolics, ACTH, or other endocrinal disorders e.g acromegaly, hypothyroidism.
