Description of disease:

Erythema Multiforme is a term describing the condition in which a patient has got a hypersensitive reaction to several things e.g. viruses (e.g. herpes), bacteria (streptococci), medicines (sulphonamides, penicillinase, furosemide, barbiturates, propanolol, tetracycline, aspirin). It has the form of red rash consisting of skin lesions such as nodules, papules or macules in the mouth.

There are three forms which depend on the stage of erythema multiforme:

1) EM minor - round, circular red spots and welts, blisters and hemorrhagic signs may also appear. They are usually located in mouth, eyes and other moist areas, on genital areas, hands and feet. Erythema Multiforme minor lasts several weeks.

2) Stevens-Johnson syndrome - blisters and erosions with hemorrhagic crusts placed in mucous membranes of nose and oral cavity, genital organs or conjunctiva. The SJ syndrome lasts from 3 to 6 weeks.

3) Lyell syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis - triggered by medicine consumption, the symptoms include red blisters that coalesce on skin, mouth, conjunctiva, cornea or genital organs. As the illness progresses the skin starts sloughing, electrolyte and protein levels change and the secondary bacterial infection begins. Mucous membranes get totally inflamed then. This is the most dangerous form of the disease as the death rate equals to 30%.
