/ Duodenal Ulcer

Description of disease:
Duodenal Ulcer is an open sore, usually oval, not larger than 1cm, found in the mucous membrane of the duodenum.
Duodenum is a first part of the small intestine, just behind the stomach, and peptic ulcers usually appear there. Although people with duodenal ulcer don't notice any symptoms very often, these may include pain in the upper abdomen or pains that occur when you are hungry. If the ulcer is placed in the back side of the duodenum, pains are noticed below the sternum. Pains usually happen during night or before meals, they ease after eating. There is no age group which is more susceptible to the illness than others as the disease affects people of all ages.
The main cause of the duodenal ulcer is a bacteria: Helicobacter pylori which is found in all of the patients. Other causes of duodenal ulcer are stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, fatty foods. Antibiotic treatment is prescribed by doctors in order to eliminate helicobacter pylori from the organism.
Over-the-counter acid-suppressing medicines as well as avoiding foods that cause pains bring relief to the patients. Medical treatment is so well-developed these days that surgical interventions are rarely needed.
