Description of disease:

Cervical erosion is a damage to the epithelium of the mucous membrane of the surface of the cervix. It is the most common disease of the female reproductive organs. Although not dangerous, untreated may cause cervical carcinoma. The disease affects women over 14 years old.

The causes include:
- mechanical trauma e.g. during tampon, speculum insertion or foreign objects in the vagina
- infections e.g. herpes, early syphilis, tampons that were removed too late, serious vaginal infections
- chemical substances such as spermicidal contraceptive foams
- risk increases with the number of sexual partners

Typically cervical erosion produces no symptoms whatsoever.

Symptoms:


spotting after an intercourse
uterine bleeding not related to menstruation
vaginal discharge
