Description of disease:
AIDS is also called Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome and it is triggered by HIV virus. As a result of infection the number of white blood cells (leukocytes) responsible for defending organism from microorganisms and combating diseases becomes severely reduced. Consequently, a person's organism is unable to cope with pathogens. A person may get infected through having sexual intercourse without any protection e.g. condoms. The risk increases during the rectal intercourse because then mucous membranes get irritated easily which makes the virus spread quickly. The infection may also appear during blood transfusion (when blood which is being transfused is infected by HIV) e.g. drug addicts who use the same syringes or from an infected mother to her child. There's also a possibility to pass the virus from mother to child during breastfeeding but it occurs very rarely. It's impossible to get infected through the contact with person's saliva, touch, using the same swimming pool, towels or toothbrush as the concentration of the virus is too low.
It usually takes several years from getting infected to noticing the first signs of the disease, many people claim that they notice symptoms after more than 10 years from the infection. AIDS does not necessarily lead to premature death. One virus type does not make any harm to patients since it doesn't attack immune system. That is why some people can carry the virus without suffering from Acquired Immunodeficiency Sydrome.
The disease prevention means avoiding the risk of infection e.g. drug addicts are advised to combat their addiction or at least to use separate syringes and needles. Everyone should remember about protection during any sexual contacts and pregnant HIV positive women should consider having an abortion.
You should contact the doctor if there was any possibility of getting infected, there is a need to make the test at least twice to be 100 percent sure. The treatment involves regular medical check-ups in special for AIDS patients clinics which make tests quickly and without any fees. Patients should have hygienic lifestyle so as not to be exposed to colds, flues and not to overstrain immune system, avoid journeys to tropical countries and visit clinics any time you notice any focus of inflammation. It is possible to slow down the disease's development by curing all infections and so as the immune system wasn't forced to work. The vaccination for HIV is yet to be discovered.
